Quilled Great Wave, Hokusai Greeting Card

Created during Japan’s Edo period around 1831, the original depicts a towering, foam-tipped wave curling above the sea, with Mount Fuji appearing small and distant in the background. Historians have been able to date the art form back to ancient Egyptian times, when crafters would use a bird’s feather, or quill, as the tool around which they coiled the paper.
